West Seattle Pee Wee Gets a Facelift...

On October 9th, 10th and 11th, WSAPWB took on the major project of renovating the two south baseball fields at our baseball complex.  We ordered 20 tons of Turface, a calcined clay field conditioner, and applied it to the infields of A-South and B-South.  Turface will help absorb water making the fields safer and more playable sooner after it rains.

Rob Salle and his expert eye was able to skim the fields to an even grade with a bobcat.  He removed any peaks and valleys, lowered the area behind home plate on A-South, and created a nice even playing surface.  In the process, we were able to build up the area behind each pitchers mound giving the pitchers a nice place to step back to during their wind up.

We then applied 10-1 ton bags (pictured above) of Turface to each field.  It had to be spread 1 to 2 inches think over the entire infield, then tilled into the soil and dragged and rolled smooth.  The end result is two infields that are void of bad hops, don't have a lip at the dirt/grass transition, and are nice to slide on.

I’d like to send a special thank you out to Rob Salle.  It was his keen eye to detail that really made a huge difference in how this project turned out.

I’d also like to thank Lee Forte who owns Pacific Rim Equipment Rental on West Marginal Way.  Lee donated the heavy equipment required to complete the job, including a bobcat, rototiller, aerators and a plate compactor.  The project wouldn’t have been possible without Lee's donation.

In addition to renovating the infields, we were able to aerate and fertilize all of the outfields.

Finally, I'd like to thank everyone who showed up and lent a helping hand.  Your efforts will make a very significant difference in the quality of the West Seattle Pee Wee Baseball product for years to come.
